In 1776, Belper became the home of the world’s second water-powered cotton-spinning mill – an event that contributed greatly to its conversion from a quiet village to a busy industrial community. The mill’s founder was Jedediah Strutt, the inventor of an attachment that made it possible to do ribbed knitting on an ordinary hand-operate knitting frame.
